Oil Tanker Runs Aground due to Cyclone

MT Pratibha Cauvery, an oil tanker with a 37-member crew on board ran aground off Chenai coast as a result of strong winds and heavy weather due to cyclone Nilam. Operations were launched by local authorities to rescue some crew members because the life boat carrying them capsized. One sailor died and three others are said to be in a serious condition.The local authorities are searching for the remaining 5 crew members.

Chemical Tanker Washed Up by Hurricane Sandy

A 170 foot long vessel was washed aground on Staten Island by Hurricane Sandy. The MT John B. Caddell is a Liquid Oil/Chemical Tanker built in 1941. The tanker was moored about a mile from where she ran aground on Front Street, Staten Island. Fortunately nobody was hurt during the incident.

Cargo Ship Grounding in Saint Lawrence Seaway

About 8:10 a.m. last Sunday the cargoship Sedna Desgagnes sheered hard to port and ran aground out of the channel just 0.1 nautical mile above the gap under the Johnstown Bridge in the St. Lawrence Seaway near Prescott. The ship was loaded with a cargo of unprocessed steel. No pollution has been reported.

Increased Collision And Grounding Risk in Chittagong

Gard released an alert today regarding increased collision and grounding risks in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The dragging of anchor due to strong underwater current at the outer anchorage, is a common occurrence. There have been cases where vessels attempting to cross the bow of an anchored vessel at close range have been involved in collisions.

Two Ships Grounded Due to Storm in Spain

Due to last week heavy storm that took place in Spain the 118 meter long containtership Celia and the 113 meter cargo ship BSLE Sunrise went aground near Valencia, Spain. Both vessels had been at anchor when a strong storm struck causing the anchors to drag until both ships were on the beach.

Tanker Grounded Near Aegna Estonia

A Bahamian flagged tanker ran aground on a shoal to the east of Aegna island at 6:55 on Monday morning. According to officials there is no threat of pollution or danger to the 24-member crew of the Kyeema Spirit, which was not carrying cargo. The tanker had been leaking bilge water, but the leakage has now been stopped.

Cargo Ship Run Aground on its Maiden Voyage

A cargo ship has run aground on its maiden voyage from Southampton to the Channel Islands. The Huelin Dispatch was loaded with containers from Southampton to the Channel Islands.  The vessel hit a rock off the coast of Alderney on last Friday. The vessel issued a distress call after running aground on an isolated rock one and a half miles south-west of Alderney.  All crew and cargo are safe.

MV Miner Salvage Operations

On Sept. 20, the empty 230-metre ship MV Miner was being towed by a tugboat to a Turkish scrapyard when it broke free in rough seas and ran aground on Scatarie Island, a provincial wilderness area about two kilometres from the northeast coast of Cape Breton. Initially attempts to pull the former Great Lakes freighter off the rocks failed but now new operations have been scheduled in order to remove the grounded vessel.

Vessel Grounded Due to Rudder Angle Transmitter Failure – Investigation Report

At 1706 on 29 April 2011, the Panama registered bulk carrier Dumun grounded while departing the port of Gladstone, Queensland. Prior to the grounding, the ship’s steering appeared to stop responding to bridge commands when the linkage between the tiller and rudder angle transmitter became detached. The steering gear continued to operate normally, but the transmitter lost its input signal and, as a result, the bridge mounted rudder angle indicator stopped working.

MAIB Releases 2011 Annual Report

Earlier today MAIB released the Annual Report for 2011 containing information for accident investigations during that period. According to the report there was a wide variety of accidents to merchant vessels investigated during 2011. For the second year in succession there were no UK registered ship losses and the number of accidents, as a ratio of the size of the fleet, was the lowest recorded by MAIB. The number of fatalities on UK registered vessels >100gt has risen slightly compared with 2010, but is still low, and the number of injuries to crew is at its lowest ever level. A further 8 seafarers lost their lives on foreign registered vessels while operating in UK waters, including 6 from the Cook Islands registered bulk carrier Swanland, which sank in heavy weather off the north Wales coast in November.
