Two boats that collided in the waters off Hong Kong on Monday night leaving 37 people dead. One of the boats was carrying more than 120 people to a fireworks display when it half-sank following the collision near Lamma Island. The search for survivors is continuing.

Vessel Safety Campaign by MOL
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, announced yesterday the launch of a campaign targeting all MOL-operated vessels, starting on October 1. “Forging ahead to become the world leader in safe operation” is a central theme in the midterm management plan “GEAR UP! MOL” which was formulated in April 2010. As part of these efforts, President Muto, executives, and other personnel will pay in-person visits to MOL-operated vessels to meet on-board employees and exchange information and opinions about prevention of incidents.
Crew Saved After Cargo Vessel Caught Fire Off Osaka Japan
Chinese crew members have been rescued by Japan’s coastguard when their Panama-registered cargo vessel Hao Han caught fire in a Japanese bay last Friday. Thick smoke poured out of Hao-Han and the ship as shown in photos developed noticable list. The incident took place off Osaka, in Western Japan.
EU Announces Measures to Monitor GHG
The European Commission has announced today that it will propose, in early 2013, measures to monitor, verify and report on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from shipping. This measure will apply to all ships calling at EU ports and could also be the basis for a global approach towards cleaner shipping. However, green groups are disappointed because emissions monitoring doesn’t address the main issue at stake: reducing GHG emissions from ships.
Two Ships Grounded Due to Storm in Spain
Due to last week heavy storm that took place in Spain the 118 meter long containtership Celia and the 113 meter cargo ship BSLE Sunrise went aground near Valencia, Spain. Both vessels had been at anchor when a strong storm struck causing the anchors to drag until both ships were on the beach.
IMO MEPC 64th session 1-5 Oct. 2012
The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) meets for its 64th session from 1 to 5 October 2012, at IMO Headquarters in London. As well as discussing matters relating to the implementation of energy-efficiency, ballast water management and ship-recycling regulations, the MEPC will also consider formally designating the Saba Bank, in the North-eastern Caribbean area of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA).
Bulk Carrier Explosion Causes Serious Burns to Seafarer
An explosion in one of the cargo holds of MV Sea Moon at 3:05pm on Friday caused serious injuries to one of her crew. The MV Sea Moon is a 57,012 DWT Bulk Carrier flagged by Marshall Islands. The explosion took place 140 miles southwest of Bermuda. The ship’s cargo was coal and its destination Karachi, Pakistan.
Moore Stephens OpCost Report 2012
Moore Stephens annual OpCost report for the financial year of 2011 has been released this month. According to OpCost 2012 report the total annual operating costs in the shipping industry have been increased by an average 2.1% in 2011. This compares with the 2.2% average rise in costs recorded for the previous year. Crew costs were the main reason for the overall increase in 2011, a 3.3% overall increase in 2011 crew costs compared to the 2010 figure has been reported. Insurance fell for the second year in succession.
Singapore Authorities Arrest Ships for Unpaid Debt
Two vessels have been arrested by Singapore authorities due to debts of around $4.7 million. The vessels were belonging to Italian shipping firm Rizzo Bottiglieri De Carlini Armatori SPA (RBD Armatori). The first vessel was the 109,000-deadweight tonne crude oil tanker, Adele Marina Rizzo, and the second the 178,000-tonne dry bulk carrier, Cavaliere Grazia Bottiglieri.
