Use of Rudder Trunk for Smuggling
On more than one occasion, vessels have been arrested in port, after discovering cocaine (as much as 100–300 kg) and stowaways in the rudder trunk of these vessels. The void space has been accessed from sea level, by climbing up into the trunk from underneath.
Monthly PSC Report for August 2013
During August 2013 the PSC detention in the Paris MoU area showed a slight decrease compared to July 2013. In the Tokyo MoU areas there has been a greater decrease of the vessels’ detentions, in August 2013 there were 97 detentions while during July 2013 there were 130. The number of detentions in the Mediterranean MoU has been decreased from 18 to just 4, maybe as a result of the civil unrest in Egypt during August. The Indian Ocean MoU detentions number remained the same for the month under review, that is 37. Finally there has been a decrease in the Black Sea MoU detentions from 15 to 7. Panama Flag Cargo Ship Sinks After Running Into Seawall Off South Korea
Yesterday at 2130 hours local time a panama flag cargo ship, belonging to China’s Lishen International Shipping Group Corporation, with a crew of 19 sank in South Korea’s southeast Pohang harbor during a storm. The Chinese Consulate General in Busan reported that up until now 9 people have been reported dead, 8 have been rescued and 2 are missing. 18 of the crew were Chinese and 1 Vietnamese. The South Korea’s coast guard conducts the rescue operation.
The Administrative Burdens of a Modern Shipmaster
During the April session of the IMO FAL Committee, Denmark hosted a presentation where the Danish Captain Christian Rørbeck shed light on the administrative burdens faced by ships on a daily basis around the world. The specific examples of administrative burdens for a container ship in service were an eye-opener.
Pumpman Dies After Entering Enclosed Space – Investigation Report
This investigation report refers to the death of a pumpman after entering a cargo tank of a chemical tanker without taking any safety precautions. The pumpman entered the cargo tank in an effort to retrieve the sampling device used to to document that the cargo had not deteriorated during transport. The crew managed to retrieve the pumpman from the cargo tank but despite efforts to save his life, he was later declared dead.

Cracks in Main Deck in Way of Hatch Corners
During survey several fatigue cracks were found in way of the elliptic curved corner of the opening in way of cargo hatch ways on the main deck. A shedder plate had been welded to the main deck in way of the hatch opening corner. This is believed to be the most probable cause of the crack in the deck plate.
