Oil and Gas Sector Outlook for 2013

The oil and gas sector is increasingly turning to technology to plug rapidly growing skills gaps, according to a new report on industry sentiment for the year ahead. GL Noble Denton’s new “Seismic Shifts” report on the future of the oil and gas sector has revealed that industry leaders are confident for significant industry growth in 2013. But, despite this optimism, major concerns are emerging over an industry skills meltdown, tougher operating environments and increasing risk and regulatory hurdles.

Three people have died and six people are missing after the cargo ship Jolly Nero crashed into the port in Genoa, Italy, toppling part of the control tower into the water.

Cargo Ship Sinks after Colliding with Containership Southwest of Sapientza Island Greece

Cook islands flagged cargo ship Piri Reis, loaded with a cargo of fertilizer, sunk southwest of Sapientza Island in Greece (sea depth at the point of the accident is approximately 2.5 km) after colliding with Antigua & Barbuda flagged containership Consouth. The containership Consouth was not carrying cargo during the collision. The causes of the accident are still unknown.

Shell Halts Alaska Drilling Program

During the last week of February Shell announced it will pause its exploration drilling activity for 2013 in Alaska’s Beaufort and Chukchi Seas to prepare equipment and plans for a resumption of activity at a later stage.

Engine Room Fire on Mobile Offshore Unit

A fire occurred in the port engine room of a semi-submersible drilling unit whilst carrying out exploration drilling in Norwegian waters. The fire was indicated by alarms in the control room and confirmed by attending personnel. The engine room was successfully isolated manually after approximately 35 minutes, and the halon system was then activated. This, however, did not completely extinguish the fire, which re-ignited. The fire was eventually extinguished some 7 hours after the initial alarm.

Tanker Harbour Feature Allision with Bridge

The 473-foot tanker Harbour Feature was successfully freed at approximately 6 p.m., Monday after alliding with the Sarah Long Bridge, on the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth. The tanker became disabled and allided with the bridge at approximately 1:30 p.m., Monday. At this time, the vessel is carrying an unknown amount of tallow oil.

New Offshore Safety Awareness Programme to Help Prevent Hydrocarbon Leaks

Step Change in Safety has launched Joined-up Thinking, a new engagement programme to help the offshore oil and gas industry continue to reduce the number of hydrocarbon leaks. Joined-up Thinking is a series of learning packs designed to increase the offshore workforce’s awareness of different safety issues, with the theme for 2013 being hydrocarbon release prevention.

Oil Discovery on the Karoon Blocks Offshore Brazil

During late January Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. confirmed the discovery of light oil at the Kangaroo-1 exploration well drilling on block S-M-1101, in the Santos basin, offshore Brazil. The well was drilled as part of an agreement announced by the Company on September 18, 2012, as a minimum work commitment for both the S-M-1101 and S-M-1165 blocks, where the Company holds a 35% participating interest.
