International Transport Federation co-ordinator Dean Summers said the Filipino crewman had gone missing from the vessel Sage Sagittarius at the weekend in the Timor Sea. The ship had been scheduled to load in Newcastle next week but was diverted by authorities and was expected to dock today in Port Kembla. The Australian Federal Police said last night they were investigating the case and had been alerted to problems on the ship on Sunday by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Fuel Cell Technology onboard OSV
With rising fuel prices and impending environmental regulations, the pressure is on for more efficient and environmentally friendly ships. DNV in the joint industry project, FellowSHIP, developed a 330 kW fuel cell which was successfully installed, and demonstrated in smooth operation for more than 7000 hours on board the offshore supply vessel Viking Lady.
New Hull Design for Fuel Economy on Ultra Large Container Ships
The design has been optimized for an operating profile along the Far East to Europe trade route involving nine speed and draught combinations. The installed propulsive power could be reduced by about 16 per cent compared to the initial hullform optimized for one draft & speed condition. The first of the new 13,800 TEU ships is under construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and will be delivered next year.
Operation of Oxy-Acetyllene Equipment
In consequence of a recent casualty, and by reference to recent survey inspections, the American Club issued a note that oxygen and acetylene equipment is in some cases being used without the fitment of flashback arrestors. This is an extremely dangerous practice. Flashback arrestors must always be fitted to the bottles. Bottles themselves must always be stowed securely in an upright position with oxygen and acetylene bottles stowed separately and away from each other, not in enclosed spaces.

Cold Ironing Standard Published
Earlier this month the International Electrotechnical Commission has published its Utility connections in port – Part 1: High Voltage Shore Connection (HVSC) Systems – General requirements. The new standard IEC/ISO/IEEE 80005-1:2012(E) describes high voltage shore connection (HVSC) systems, on board the ship and on shore, to supply the ship with electrical power from shore.
Viña del Mar CIC on Fire Figthing Systems
The South American Port State Control association, Viña del mar, are following the lead set by the Tokyo and Paris MOUs and will carry out a new Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) between the Sept 1st and Nov 30th, 2012 on foreign merchant vessels calling the region during the aforementioned period, with emphasis on the safety of fire fighting system (FSS), for the purpose of ensuring compliance with SOLAS – Chapter II/2.
