This incident refers to a fire that started in the main engine room of a merchant vessel when at sea. Both main engines were stopped by the crew. The ship had full electrical power supply during the whole event due to separate auxiliary engine room. The crew used CO2 and water to put out the fire, which was finally extinguished after approximately four hours.

The South American Port State Control association, Viña del mar, are following the lead set by the Tokyo and Paris MOUs and will carry out a new Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) between the Sept 1st and Nov 30th, 2012 on foreign merchant vessels calling the region during the aforementioned period, with emphasis on the safety of fire fighting system (FSS), for the purpose of ensuring compliance with SOLAS – Chapter II/2.
