The IMO’s Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment held its 1st session from Monday 10 through Friday 14 March 2014 under the chairmanship of Dr S Ota (JAPAN) and his Vice-Chair, Mr K Hunter (UK) both were subsequently re-elected for 2015.

Chemical Tanker & General Cargo Ship Collision – Investigation Report

This investigation report is referring to the collision between the Norwegian chemical tanker Sundstraum and the Malta registered general cargo ship Kapitan Lus. At 1316 LT on 3 July 2009, the Norwegian vessel Sundstraum and the Malta registered vessel Kapitan Lus collided in the Drogden Channel off Copenhagen. Sundstraum was on route from Tjelbergodden in Norway to Stettin in Poland with a cargo of 3707 tonnes of methanol. The vessel was southbound in the Drogden Channel, with the officer of the watch manning the bridge. Kapitan Lus was on its way from St Petersburg in Russia to Le Havre in France with a cargo of 4193 tonnes of aluminium and 182 tonnes of uranium oxide. The vessel was northbound in Drogden and the bridge crew consisted of the Master, the officer of the watch, a Danish pilot and the helmsman. There was good visibility and no wind or seas worth mentioning in the area.

Cargo Ship & Barge Collision in Houston Ship Channel

Last Friday a cargo ship and a barge have collided in Houston channel. Currently the USCG is investigating the cause of the collision between the cargo ship Genius Star VII and a barge loaded with 840,000 gallons of fuel oil in the Houston Ship Channel.

New Training Requirements for Seafarers in Polar Areas

In the IMO, the countries have just agreed on training requirements for seafarers on board ships in Arctic regions. Thus, the IMO still follows the plan for finalizing the Polar Code which is to enhance safety of navigation in polar regions.

The Next Five Years in Shipping

According to a report from Norton Rose Fulbright, shipping is the most negative response to high-capacity or high-speed assets, with almost 30 per cent of the participants of the Survey conducted by Norton Rose Fulbright, seeing these as creating overcapacity – much higher than aviation and rail (11 and six per cent). While some feel they will open up new opportunities, 22 per cent express doubt over their sustainability.

100 Billion Cubic Meters of Gas via Blue Stream to Turkey

Yesterday at 11:00 am Moscow time the Blue Stream gas pipeline supplied its 100th billion cubic meter of Russian natural gas to Turkey. In 2013 gas supplies via Blue Stream had stood at 13.7 billion cubic meters of gas accounting for over a half of the total gas volume (26.7 billion cubic meters) exported by Gazprom to Turkey in 2013.
