Ships operating in the polar environments are exposed to a number of unique risks. Poor weather conditions and the relative lack of good charts, communication systems and other navigational aids pose challenges for mariners.
IMO MSC 92 Decisions Summary
IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) met at the Organization’s London Headquarters for its 92nd session from 12 to 21 June 2013. Among others the MSC adopted amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) relating to passenger drills, it also discussed recommendations arising from the Costa Concordia incident and considered matters related to piracy and armed robbery against ships and other items submitted by the IMO sub-committees.

World Maritime Day 2012
Today (27 September 2012) marks the 35th celebration of World Maritime Day. This year’s theme is: “IMO: One hundred years after the Titanic”, a theme chosen by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reflect on the safety of passenger shipping today, and into the future, on the centenary anniversary of the Titanic disaster.
MSC 90 Outcome
MSC 90 was held in London from 16-25 May 2012 under the chairmanship of Deputy Director-General Christian Breinholt. At the ninetieth session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 90) the following items have been discussed and relevant decisions have been taken: Piracy, Passenger ship safety, Navigation bridge visibility, Fishing vessel safety, The Polar Code, Development of new ship standards and the use of risk analyses.
SOLAS Amendments Came into Force on July 1st 2012
The following amendments to the regulations annexed to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS 74) adopted by Resolutions MSC.308(88) and MSC.309(88) came into force a few days ago: Regulation 41 of Chapter II-1, Regulations 1 and 3 of Chapter II-2, Regulation 7 of Chapter II-2, Regulation 18 of Chapter V, Regulation 23 of Chapter V.
