Forecast of Global Exporters and Importers of Energy

Maintaining a robust global energy marketplace is critical to meeting rising global energy demand. The backbone of the global energy marketplace is free trade, which enables energy to move across various boundaries by pipeline, ship, railway, or in the case of electricity, by transmission lines. Oil and natural gas are the most widely traded energy sources, but other forms of energy, including coal, electricity and some renewable fuels, are also actively traded on the international market.

Use of Drones in POLAR Shipping

Fednav recently became the first shipping company to employ drones, or Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV), for ice reconnaissance on a commercial voyage. The Umiak I, one of Fednav’s most powerful icebreakers, used a variety of video-equipped drones to scout ahead of the vessel in the ice-covered waters of the Labrador Coast. Best Practice in Ships Financial Management

While Finance and Accounting departments normally do not have much influence on a company’s financial performance directly, they play a huge role in providing accurate data and thereby enabling other departments and the management to make the right decisions. During 2013 GL and Fraunhofer CML experts conducted a study involving about 100 ship managing companies across the globe to find out what they are doing to improve their operations and what they consider as “best practice” in the industry.

Evolution of Shipping

My sea career lasted for an exciting decade which saw huge growth in ship size. I went through the evolution of shipping from sailing on a 3,500 TEU jumbo container vessel that was built in the year when I was born to an 8,000 TEU container vessel. In 2003, that 8,000 TEU vessel owned by my former employer was entered into the World Guinness Book of Records as the largest container vessel ever built. But although I stopped sailing on the largest ship at the time, the size of ships did not stop growing.
