A Russian cargo vessel, the MV Amurskaya, went missing on Sunday in the Sea of Okhotsk. Vessel’s cargo was 700 tons of gold ore. The vessel was en route from the port Kiran to the port of Okhotsk and the number of onboard vessel is supposed to be 9 crew member although in other media reports there were 11 crew members.
Superintendent Dies Onboard Sage Sagittarius
A Japanese superintendent who was put onto a Newcastle coal ship after two suspicious deaths, has become the third person to die on the ship in the last six weeks. Kosaku Monji, 37, was on the Sage Sagittarius on October 6 when it was unloading a cargo of Newcastle coal in the Japanese port of Kudamatsu.
MSC Napoli Structural Failure – Investigation Report
During the morning of 18 January 2007, when on passage in the English Channel, the 4419 TEU container ship MSC Napoli encountered heavy seas, causing the ship to pitch heavily. The ship was making good a speed of 11 knots and the height of the waves was up to 9m. At about 1105, the vessel suffered a catastrophic failure of her hull in way of her engine room. The master quickly assessed the seriousness of the situation and decided to abandon ship. Following the broadcast of a distress call at 1125, the 26 crew abandoned the vessel in an enclosed lifeboat. They were later recovered by two Royal Navy helicopters. There were no injuries.
Marine Boilers Oil Contamination
In early October DNV released a technical newsletter focusing on the immediate and consequential impact of oil contamination on auxiliary boilers. This kind of leakage in coil flanges or broken gaskets in plate heat exchangers frequently occurs. If the problem is not observed in time, the boiler could be completely destroyed due to overheating of the furnace because of reduced water flow and minimised heat transfer/cooling of the boiler tubes.
Filipino STCW compliance

A letter from the European Community Shipowners Association (ECSA) to its members dated 1st October 2012 bolsters the view that the world’s top crew supplier is not yet over the hump.

In early October Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) released a study on the psychological impacts of piracy on seafarers. While incidents of piracy decline off the Horn of Africa, an inestimable number of seafarers continue to bear the psychological impact of captivity by pirates.
Pirated MV Orna Released After 2 Years
Last week a cargo ship was freed after being held captive for nearly two years. The MV Orna, was hijacked 400 nautical miles northeast of the Seychelles in December 2010. The ransom for MV Orna was $600,000. Six hostages are still being held by the pirates on land.
