A number of vessels have reported temporary loss of steering when reducing ship’s speed, which has resulting in unintended changes in the ship’s direction. This incident information refers to a fully loaded tanker approaching port under pilotage, lost steering and grounded. As a result the vessel suffered bottom damage.

Attempts for Pilot Disembarkation in Rough Sea Cause Bulk Carrier Grounding – Investigation Report
This investigation report refers to the grounding pf MV TALI off the coast of Norway on 29 January 2008. In an attempt to disembark the pilot in rough sea resulted in the rudder and the propeller of the vessel being damaged, moreover the propeller shaft moved outwards in such a way that the vessel started making water through the shaft tube. The engine room was filled with water to a height of ten metres, and the vessel lost its manoeuvrability.
Propeller Blade and Nozzle Upgrade
MAN Diesel & Turbo’s PrimeServ division in Frederikshavn has, in close cooperation with shipowner and constructional engineering company NCC, performed a propulsion equipment upgrade for the ‘MV Baltic’, a 900 m³ sand and gravel dredger. A 14 % improvement in fuel efficiency has been reported following an exchange and modernization of the vessel’s propeller blades and propeller nozzle.
Rolls-Royce Permanent Magnet Tunnel Thruster
Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has delivered the first of its newly-developed permanent magnet tunnel thruster (TT-PM) to Norwegian company Olympic Shipping, who will operate the thruster on their vessel Olympic Octopus.
