Tanker Pollution Busted by Satellite Images

The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) issued a press notice regarding the tanker pollution conviction after use of satellite imagery as the primary evidence. At a hearing at Truro Magistrates Court, the owner of a tanker paid a total of £22,500 in fines and costs after pleading guilty to a breach of UK maritime pollution legislation.

Company Pleads Guilty to Breaches of the ISM Code

On the 19 June 2012, a Port State Control Inspector from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) boarded a Panama registered vessel at Portland. During his inspection the Inspector noted that access was being made into the vessel’s ballast tanks without proper procedures being in place. The Master was issued with a Prohibition Notice requiring entries be made in the correct manner in accordance with the Code of Safe Working Practices.

Thirteen Detained Ships by UK PSC in October 2012

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) announced last week that thirteen foreign flagged ships were under detention in UK ports during October 2012 after failing Port State Control (PSC) inspection. Latest monthly figures show that there were six new detentions of foreign flagged vessels in UK ports during October 2012 and seven vessels remained under detention from previous months. Only four vessels remained under detention at the end of October. The overall rate of detentions compared with inspections carried out over the last twelve months was 3.4% this is slightly up from Septembers twelve month rate.
