Grounding of Oil Tanker Due to Strong Winds at Syros, Greece

A tanker scheduled for Dry Docking in Neorion Shipyards was grounded in the early morning hours of Friday (03:15 LT) in the maritime region of Azolimnos Syros. The Liberian flagged Oil Tanker “ALIAKMON” (L=213,4m / B=32,29m / GRT=35711 t / DWT=61284t) was moored waiting to get in the drydock. Because of the strong winds in the area it was led astray and “stuck” on the rocks.

From the grounding it has not been reported any inflow or injury of anyone of the 33 Russian crew.

In the area, three tugs of Neorion Shipyard, the 511 Lifeboats of the Port Authority of Syros, the PLS 421 antipollution vessel and divers were dispatched immediately in order to evaluate the condition of the flat bottom of the ship as well as the morphology of the sea bottom. Heavy weather prevailed in the area of the incident until until the morning hours.

The weather conditions at the point of a maritime accident were not good.

Finally at 09:45 LT, the ship was towed with the help of the shipyard’s tugs. No injury has been reported so far.
