It is not unusual for a seafarer to fit monkey’s fists with pieces containing additional weight in order to ensure that the heaving line will travel greater distance when thrown.
Although this may seem to be practicable it is not acceptable, since it can increase the risk of serious injuries to other workers due to the increased kinetic energy, not to mention sharp edges.
Some ports prohibit the use of additional heavy material on monkey’s fists and of course vessels may be subject to fines according to local regulations.
Alternatives of using monkey’s fists are:
- Throwing reings made of light/soft materials
- Small leather bags which contain some sand
